November 3, 2017 By Will Cheshier

(HILLSBORO, Mo.) A year of resolve, hard work, and determination culminated into a Class Four District One championship as the Hillsboro Hawks sealed their first district title since the 2012 season in a 36-28 win over the Cape Girardeau Central Tigers at home Friday night.

It marked the first Class Four District One title for head coach Lee Freeman since he took over the program as head coach during the 2014 season. The Hawks (9-3) avenged their 63-24 loss to Cape Central at home in the title game last year. In his first year, the 2018 graduating class were freshman and the Hawks fell that year to the Tigers (7-5) 42-35.

For senior Tyler Isaacson and the rest of the senior class, they have been working all year to get to this point…

It marked the end of a four year championship run by Cape Central with two of those wins coming against the Hawks. Freeman added it’s a special moment for him and the seniors…

The game got started with a five minute drive by the Tigers that stalled inside the ten yard line of Hillsboro thanks to a strong stand by the defense. Isaacson and the Hawks then engineered a 92 yard drive of their own that ended in a touchdown run by senior Joe Garner…

Hillsboro would convert the two point conversion to make it 8-0 with 1:53 left in the first quarter. Cape Central would turn the ball over on a fumble by sophomore quarterback Cameron Cox. Hillsboro would take over in Cape Central territory after the fumble.

This time it was senior Luke Skaggs getting Hillsboro back on the board with a 13 yard touchdown run. The Hawks failed the two point conversion and it made it 14-0 with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. The Tigers would answer on a two yard touchdown run from senior Aaron Harris, but they failed the two point try and it was 14-6.

Garner would score for the second time from two yards out with 2:07 left in the first half to push the Hillsboro score to 20-6, but the Tigers answered right back on a 24 yard touchdown pass from Cox to senior Joseph Baker. It would be Hillsboro getting the last blow in entering the halftime break…

The Isaacson to Michael Keller connection gave Hillsboro a 28-14 halftime lead. Cape Central came out and scored 14 unanswered points against Hillsboro to tie the game at 28, both came on one yard touchdown runs.

Isaacson put Hillsboro back out in front with 6:10 to go in the fourth quarter on a two yard score…

Despite all the offense, it was the Hillsboro defense that sealed the championship…

Prior to that play, it was senior Joe Marscheutz sacking Cox to force the fourth and long. Marscheutz described the play….

Freeman thought the defense played a pivotal role in the victory…

Cape Central head coach Arlen Pixley complimented the Hawks and their senior class…

The Hawks will take on Ladue Horton Watkins in the quarterfinals next Friday night at home. KJFF will have the broadcast Friday night.

The party is still going though for the Hawks after their district championship win…
