The Hillsboro junior varsity baseball team has the makings of an excellent team this spring, according to JV coach Chris Grewe. The young Hawks look to have talent in many areas which should make the varsity head coach, Kevin Lucas, anxious to see what these athletes can do.
“I have some lofty expectations this year with a talented squad,” said Grewe. “I feel like I have solid pitching, defense, and offense this year, and am looking forward to seeing it in action. As with any young team, we are wanting to develop them into players that can help out the varsity team this year or next year.”
As is the case with most JV squads, there are a lot of new faces each season. This spring is no different for the Hawks. “It’s a new crop of players this year with one returning player, junior Griffin Smith,” said Grewe. “Some top players from last year’s freshman team are sophomores Noah Shuman, Gabe King, Jase Stewart, Zach Whaley, Eli Epley, and Max Hildebrand. Joining these sophomores is fellow classmate Jacob Taylor. I also have four very talented freshman joining the team as well. They are Connor Jenkins, Zach Schneider, Kyle Cozort, and Bailey Heidbreder.”
Grewe knows the schedule will be a challenge. “The schedule is always a competitive schedule with a couple of good tournaments in there.”
The team opens play on Friday at Parkway Central. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. For a complete look at the schedule, click here: 2019 Hillsboro Baseball Schedule
