The Hillsboro junior varsity girls soccer team defeated the Hancock Tigers on Tuesday in the second round of pool play of the DeSoto Tournament. Zoe Wood scored the lone goal of the match, advancing the Hawks to tonight’s championship contest against the Sullivan Eagles.
Neither team could establish dominance for most of the contest Tuesday, but with 17:53 remaining, Wood scored off a great pass by Gracie Schmitt to take the lead. “We struggled with our attacking side tonight, having five offsides calls against us,” said JV coach Tish Naeger. “Our girls are being real aggressive, but we just need them to take a second and check over their shoulders to make those reads and adjustments.”
Melanie Bentley got her second straight shutout in goal for Hillsboro. Coach Naeger said the team didn’t have the energy it needed at the start of the match. “We looked a little tired in the first half…I’m not sure if it was playing back to back, or if we just aren’t use to the heat yet,” she said. “But we were able to refresh at halftime and played a more solid second half. It was a physical game, but I’m very proud the girls finished strong.”
Hillsboro, now 5-2-1, will play for the title tonight at 7:00 p.m. against Sullivan. The Eagles won their pool with a 2-1 victory over Windsor, and a 1-0 win over Perryville.
