The Hillsboro varsity golf team finished in fifth place at Monday’s district tournament at Quail Creek Golf Course. In doing so, two Hawks qualified for next week’s sectional competition.
Frank Tello and Werner Finder will go on to compete at sectionals on May 6. Tello led all Hillsboro golfers shooting a 99 and finishing 17th overall. “I did not play very well, but I was happy with the weather conditions and the people I played with,” Tello said. “It was a very good day for fun and competition.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement for his play on Monday, but don’t mistake that for a lack of appreciation for getting to the next level. “I’m very happy with my qualification,” Tello remarked. “I just know I could have shot a way better round than I did. I’m hoping I can enter sectionals with a better tempo and a better round!”
Werner was next in line for the Hawks, carding a 106 in his qualifying performance. “It means so much to get to sectionals,” he admitted. “My thought on my play today was not the best. I had an okay score, but I didn’t think my score was good enough to make it to sectionals. On the last hole, I had a score of 100, and my coach said I needed to get a 104 to make it in. I ended up getting a 106.” But when all was said and done, that score was good enough to make the cut.
Two other Hillsboro golfers helped the team to the fifth place finish. Jack Politte came in at 112, while Elijah Rogers followed with a 117. The team’s score totaled 434 strokes. Lutheran South won the team competition with a 309.
One other Hawk, Mason Watkins, participated and scored a 124.
Ameritime Sports will follow Tello and Finder as they take part in sectionals next week.
