Sixteen boys from Hillsboro’s cross country program participated in last Thursday’s Ed White Warrior Invitational in Arnold. The boys ran in three different divisions. The varsity boys finished in third place in a tightly contested division.
The Hawks collected 93 points to place third, just ahead of Seckman with 94 points. Clayton finished in second place with 68 points, while DeSmet won the event with 62.
Josh Allison was the top HHS finisher as he crossed the finish line with a season best 17:35.80 time, good for eighth place. All three runners ran their best times of the season.
“Under the extreme heat today, I was very proud of all the boys’ efforts at the meet,” head coach Tom Gordon said after the races. “I’m exited to see what we can do in a couple of weeks.”
The big story was the performance of Gavin Vaughn in the Mixed Freshman Boys/Girls event. Vaughn finished in the top spot, winning the race in 18:49.66. There were a total of 135 boys in the race. His time was a season best. Cole Laudenbach (26th/20:57.28), Evan Morris(32nd/21:32.31), Jude Short (43rd/22:02.40), and Isaiah Coaley (71st/23:49.07) each ran a season best time, and helped the Hawks to a fifth place finish with 117 points. SLUH won the event with 21 points.
Hillsboro didn’t earn a team standing in the JV race. The top finisher in that division was Cid Gansmann in 54th place with a time of 20:40.90, another season best.
After this strong performance, Hillsboro is anxious for its next meet on Saturday at the Parkway West Dale Shepherd Invitational.
