The Hillsboro boys junior varsity basketball team improved its record to 4-1 on the season Thursday, with a 55-27 victory over Crystal City in its opening round game of the Herculaneum JV Boys Basketball Christmas Tournament. The victory propels the Hawks into today’s semifinal match-up with Festus. Tip off is scheduled for 2:30 this afternoon.
Thursday, the Hawks rode the hot shooting of Jasiah Tullock and Kyle Phipps. The two combined for 40 points in the contest. Tullock was hot the entire game, scoring 12 in the first half and 11 points in the second for final game total of 23. He said the tempo of the game dictated his performance. “When the game is fast paced, everything starts to become easy, so I like to keep going as much as I can,” he said after the game. “We had a lot of easy rebounds that led to fast breaks.” Phipps scored six in the first half, and 11 in the second half for his game totals to add up to 17 points.
“We controlled the tempo of the game in the first half,” JV coach Brian Sucharski pointed out. The Hawks were up 13-2 after one quarter and 30-15 at halftime. And despite the fast tempo, Sucharski would like to see his team play a little better when the pace is settled. “We can still execute our half court offense better as a team,” he said.
Cade Wokurka netted seven points (all in the second quarter), and Patrick Lee and Noah Holland had six and two points respectively to round out the Hillsboro scoring.
